How to Figure Out What You Should Be Doing
Figuring out what I really want to do and what I should be doing (because I believe both go hand in hand), has been one of the most difficult things for me throughout my life.
I have always been very curious about so many different things, and passionate about pursuing those different curiosities. Furthermore, I actually believe I can be successful at many of those endeavours as well (without sounding too confident). The problem? You can't do everything. I can't do everything. Especially, at the same time.
You Can’t Do Everything At the Same Time
We need to focus on one thing at time. It's how you become great at something. I believe consistency is key to any type of success, but if you're doing a million things at the same time, consistency can become very difficult, and pretty much impossible.
I have jumped from one career to another, from one fascination to another, preventing me from really excelling at any one given thing. So how do you pick one thing? Or at least, which one thing to focus on first?
What to focus on first
Think about it like this:
If today was your last day on Earth, what would be the first thing that you would regret not doing. What's the one thing you have been procrastinating with, or waiting for the the perfect time to really get started on? What's the one thing you wish you at least gave a try?
That's what you should be doing. It's that simple.
This gets complicated when you don't believe you can do that one thing, or it may create a lot of initial sacrifice and and even tension in your life. Nonetheless, this is something you should be doing.
I don't have many fears, but regret is definitely one of them.
The idea of never having the chance to do that one thing I've had in the back of my mind, covered in dust on the shelf is frightening to me.
Unfortunately, procrastination pushes it back, life sets it aside, and eventually you completely forget about how obsessed you were about it in the beginning.
Remember what it was like to work on something for so long, regardless how tired you were, but you just couldn't let yourself stop or go to sleep because you were too excited about what the finished product would look like.
That's what you should doing. Or at least incorporate it into your life somehow.
